Cinematic Fashion: The Notebook |

If you’re anything like me, you’ve seen the 2004 romantic drama “The Notebook” too many times to count, but that is a good thing. This adorable yet heart-wrenching film chronicles the love between Allie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah (Ryan Gosling) who spend a summer falling in love but then through a series of events are torn apart until they make contact years later.

The title is a reference to the other story in the film, that of elderly Noah reading to Allie, who has developed Alzheimer’s in old age, their love story from a notebook in hopes that she will remember. Aside from that modern-day aspect, the movie takes place in the 1940’s, and everything from the sets to the costumes to the music is done beautifully in a period-accurate way.

Throughout the film, Allie wears gorgeous custom-made 1940’s looks. What I love about the time period is how put together every woman in her outfit choices. Each piece of a woman’s ensemble was well thought-out and coordinated. Allie’s costumes in the film work from her head to her toes and create a complete look.

Pick dresses that have floral or other cute patterns like Allie’s  and add dainty ladylike jewelry that coordinates. Finish your look with vintage looking pumps or sandals and a feminine bag. Sometimes it’s hard to find swimsuit inspiration, but with the famous “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird!” swimming scene and the number of retro high-waisted swimsuits available right now, you can get inspired by another one of Allie’s fabulous looks.

For a more casual hairstyle, try a pair of low French braided pigtails or a low ponytail with a headband. Or curl your hair and add a big flower clip that coordinates with your look for a more formal occasion.
